Get to know about our SNWO organization

The Somali National Women Organization (SNWO) was founded in early 1960 after Somalia gained independence. It is a nonprofit making and Women Umbrella Organization that is legally registered in compliance with Somalia's constitution and laws. The organization was founded by a group of Somali women professionals who are voluntarily committed to uniting Somali women in order to ensure their active involvement in community and government activities at all levels: local, regional, and national. The goal of the SWNO is to bring women together and strengthen them socially, economically, and politically so that they can meet the particular issues that they face in society. It is still the only national, regional, and municipal women's organization

Vision

SNWO envisions a united and empowered Somali women living in peace, stability, justice, and prosperity throughout the country, with legally formed and operating structures.

Mission

SNWO supports access to long-term women’s programs, such as capacity-building and effective livelihood conditions through women’s empowerment, TVET education, and health facilities, as well as human rights advocacy, awareness of gender-based violence, and community integration.

OBJECTIVE

Ensure Somali women’s active involvement in decision-making forums, peace building and conflict resolution, and political, social, and developmental activities and programs.

 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

 

  • To increase women empowerment through skills and job creations
  • To fight for human rights as well as women rights
  • Coordinate partnership and networking amongst women and supervise organization’s activities locally, regionally and national.
  • To Initiate and facilitate activities that promotes women affairs.
  • To Build Women’s capacities through trainings and exposure visits aimed at experience sharing and learning.
  • To conduct civic education against violation of women and children’s rights, Gender-Based violations, Sexual violations, Negative Cultural Practices and Ethnicities.
  • To Carry out activities promoting women cooperatives empowerments including poultry farming, fishery cooperatives and sesame cooperatives and etc
  • To Promote and contribute to the human rights activities
  • To Enhance the child health awareness in order to get safe children in better condition
  • To Promote and advocate Girl-Child education and increased girls enrolments in learning institutions
  • Promote peace and security in the country
ACTIVITIES OF THE ORGANIZATION
  • Organize and facilitate capacity building trainings and exposure learning visits.
  • Initiate livelihood programs for rural and urban women.
  • Carry out baseline surveys and research on women’s needs and their capabilities.
  • Organize and facilitate monthly, quarterly and annual women consultative forums/meeting.
  • Conduct civic education sensitization and awareness creation forums aimed at promoting women social and political rights and advocating for their participation in political and administrative leadership positions.
  • Enhance girl child education and women rights
  • Create women empowerment program through skills development and job creation
  • Women association projects including, fishery, poultry,farming and domestic skills
